List of Snow Play areas near the San Francisco Bay Area

We live in a great area where we enjoy great weather year around, and a few minutes/hours from the beach as well as mountains, National Parks and hiking trails.

During winter months, especially during holiday season, snow play becomes one of our interests.

Spicer Snow Park above Arnold, CA.

Here is a compilation of snow play areas easily accessible from the Bay Area, from a number of sources including Maithry members.

California State Parks site has an extensive list, and includes info. on permits and fees:

From ManojE:

Off I-80, on the way to Reno, near Donner Summit:

Soda Springs (

ADDRESS: 41776 Yuba Gap Dr., Emigrant Gap, CA 95715

ATTENTION: Directions to the Sno-Park found on most mapping programs send you to Emigrant Gap. DO NOT EXIT FREEWAY AT EMIGRANT GAP - THERE IS NO TURN-AROUND. EXIT YUBA GAP INSTEAD.
I-80 East from Sacramento: Take Yuba Gap Exit, 30 miles east of Colfax. Turn right, follow the road to the 'Y' and stay left. Follow signs to the Sno-Park gate, approximately 1 mile from freeway.

Near Angels Camp, CA

Spicer Snow Play Area, off CA-4, above the city of Arnold. (Make sure to stop at the SNAC store and get your $5 parking permit for the snow play area.)

Interested in renting a snow mobile, and exploring the Sierra Nevada wilderness? Perfect place for this is Bear Valley Ski Resort above Angels Camp/Arnold.

From Praveen:

If you want to try out skiing or snow boarding Mt Rose in Tahoe would be an ideal place for beginners.

From Sajeev:

One place i'd like to add to the list is Sierra-at-Tahoe ( It is a good place to learn for Kids (4-7). The package is cheaper and the class size is smaller.

Recent storms turn our area into a winter wonderland!! (12/2009)

I am sure we all have noticed the mountains around the South Bay had been covered in snow for the past couple of days. It is an amazing scene!

Here is a slide show of some really cool pictures of snow scenery around the San Francisco Bay Area taken by various folks who live in the area.

Will we have a white Christmas?

The slide show is also available on San Jose Mercury News' website.
