Maithry kindles in us the fire of our passion of being Keralite. It rejuvinates in us the memories of things that were dear to us when we grew up in God's Own Country - the bright colors of the temple arts, the sublime melodies of our ethnic music, the mesmeric mythological fables shrouding the land and its dieties.

Malayalam Class:

As kids of Maithry Family become part of the US culture, they slowly start drifting away from their mother tongue, Malayalam. Maithry family realized the need in opening the ocean of knowledge to their kids, for Malayalam language also. Many parents started teaching their kids fundamentals of the Malayalam language at home and easily realized how difficult it is to teach a new language at home without the pressure and need from a school. This difficulty, combined with the strong desire, led many of the members to evolve an alternate method to help kids learn Malayalam. That gave birth to a strong and successful idea from the members for their kids - “Malayalam Group Classes by the Mothers”.

The humble beginning was on June 14th 2003 at Sunnyvale when some Maithry family members got together with their kids and started the wheel rolling. From then onwards many kids have come forward to participate in the classes. Now this venture has spun into three sessions of Malayalam classes, every week, at Sunnyvale, Cupertino and Fremont. These group classes provide the kids with a highly motivated and stress free environment to learn their mother tongue.

In addition to the alphabets of Malayalam, kids also learn the culture and arts of Kerala and thus grow up the same way as they would have, if lived in Kerala. These kids also participate in many of the group programs during different celebration events of Maithry.

At present no new sessions are planned. If you are interested in teaching a class, please send mail to: classes@maithry.org

Maithry Singers:

Music riding over radio frequencies, filled our hearts with subconscious awareness and yearning for songs that spun themselves into the fabric of our life. Time may have faded those memories, but the desire to relive those moments never dies in our hearts.

It is nothing different that happened when all the singers in Maithry joined together to prepare a music program for Onam 2003. The outstanding success of the music program bore witness on the fact that it is not a few of us that took music to heart, and that it was the wish of every music lover in Maithry to see a more organized efforts to promote the music talents in Maithry. And thus the "Maithry Singers" was born and everyone who was interested in music was invited to jump into the bandwagon. People who were once shy to demonstrate their musical talents, shed their inhibitions and performed with pride and vigor, and with the cheers and encouragement and professional guidance from the group, they groomed into excellent singers over a brief period of time.

Maithry Singers meets many times a year and provides an organized venue for members of Maithry to perform and improve their musical talents. It aims at bringing to our newer generations the awareness of our music by providing concerts spanning all schools of Indian music. More than anything else it is a venue for music lovers to get together as families and have fun, play games like 'Anthaakshari', and listen to each other singing.
